Guardsmen

Archers (Ranged units) are only good against Flying units and Melee units, so they are useless against monsters. Use them only as defense units of your city if yopu do not attack other cities. Spearmen (Melle units) are the only units suited to attack monsters. They also have the best carrying capacity. You want to have an army mainly on these. Riders are good against Siege and Ranged units , so they are useless against monsters. Use them only as defense units of your city if yopu do not attack other cities.

Specialists

Only good if you attack other cities as they are the only unit with strength against humans.

Engineer Corps

Only good if you attack other cities as they are the only unit with strength against fortifications.

Monsters

They are very expensive to revive. Do not try them before advancing A LOT in the game.

TIP: If you do not attack other cities train only Guardsmen until you reach Guardsmen Level V or so.
